Natural Canals


The Natural Canal dredging project has now been completed. This authorized hydraulic dredging project provided for the dredging of approximately 18,500 linear feet of residential “natural” canals, which were previously dredged in the October 2007-March 2008 dredge cycle. These canals consist of four residential canals (canals #14 to #17) located between Laurinburg and Concord Streets and commercial canals (canals #21, #22 and #23) located between Causeway and Laurinburg Streets, as well as the entrance canals located north of residential canals #8 and #3 (between Raeford and Union Streets and Cumberland and Moore Streets, respectively). The dredge prism consisted of a 40’ wide maximum, except at modified areas around the commercial canal where the maximum width was 20’ wide. The design elevation depth was -6.0” MLW. Approximately 30,143 cubic yards of material was removed as a result of this dredging project. All material excavated was pumped to US Army Corps of Engineers Disposal Area No. 306, located approximately ½ mile west of the Odell Williamson Bridge along the AIWW.

The Town would like to thank our property owners and guests for their assistance in assuring that this was a smooth and successful project. These dredging cycles are scheduled in five year intervals in order to collect the necessary funds to proceed with the maintenance of the Natural Canals. The next dredging cycle for the Natural Canals is scheduled for 2018--2019.


The opinion of probable cost for the next natural canal dredging project is $1,004,800. In order to meet this projected cost by F/Y 2018-19, the assessment for the natural canals will be increased from $3.00 to $3.74 per linear feet. This equates to an increase for a fifty foot lot from $150 to $187.
