PUBLIC INPUT SESSION
OCTOBER 5, 2021
Property Owners and Residents of OIB are encouraged to attend a public meeting at Town Hall on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 beginning at 6:00 PM, to discuss the conceptual design and offer input for a new community center for the island. The Board began discussing this project in 2018 while developing our Comprehensive System-Wide Recreation Master Plan. At that time two community meetings were held on February 5th and March 5th, 2018. These meetings were conducted so that residents would be able to voice their opinions on the topic of recreation needs for the future of OIB. Approximately 75 people attended the meetings and provided much-needed feedback. A survey was also taken at this time requesting input on this subject. Again, on February 25, 2019, during a budget retreat, the Board held discussion regarding the future renovation of the existing Town Hall as a Community Center once the new Town Hall was completed and requested public input at the April 8, 2019 Open Forum Meeting. A notice of this meeting was posted on March 28, 2019 on the Town website, social media, and through the Town’s e-notification system.
The meeting was held, and public comment was received from numerous residents in favor of a community center and their recommendations on what they would like to see included in such plans. Minutes from this meeting are available for review on the Town website (www.oibgov.com). The Board continued to have discussion on this issue at several Board meetings and most recently during budget workshops held for FY 21/22. After the approval of the FY 21/22 budget, completion of the new Town Hall and direction from the Board, staff began discussion with an Architect who designed the current Town Hall facility to gather information on whether the existing building could facilitate such a community/island emergency response center.
As stated at the September 14, 2021 Board meeting, the architect explained he had been tasked with first evaluating the existing building to see if it could include the elements that had been suggested by the residents and the Board to include emergency services as well as larger spaces for community events. Mr. Walker added that due to many additions over the years, the need for more open space and the fact of dealing with structural, fire protection and other elements, it was his professional opinion that such a project would be cost prohibitive. Therefore, a conceptual design that would approach a new building to take advantage of the overall property and allowing proper ingress and egress for emergency vehicles was prepared.
At this time the Board has made NO decisions on the future of this site, other than to request an additional public meeting be scheduled to receive additional comments from our property owners and residents regarding this conceptual drawing and input on this topic. There has been NO vote to tear down the existing structure or to move forward with the planning of a new facility.
We hope you will join us on October 5th to discuss this project.
